The radiation produced by the short undulator is observed off-axis so that the beam is not interrupted. Wavelengths radiated which are longer than the bunch length are coherent and may be more intense than the shorter wavelengths by a factor of up to 10. The total energy radiated thus changes as the bunch length changes, and a measurement of the radiated energy provides a robust beam diagnostic. This non-disturbing diagnostic would be useful in applications where the length of short electron bunches is critical, such as singlepass FELs and linear colliders. For example, real-time bunch length measurements could be used to optimize performance of a single-pass FEL. The experiment is performed at the Source Development Lab (SDL) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The theory and description of the experiment are reviewed, and the first experimental results are presented.

A Non-interrupting Electron Beam Diagnostic Using Coherent Off-axis Undulator Radiation

We propose a technique for measuring the length of an electron bunch from a linear accelerator without interrupting the electron beam. Bunch lengths are measured by observing off-axis undulator radiation. The wavelength of undulator radiation increases with the angle of emission. At angles as large as 10 degrees, the wavelength may be longer than the electron bunch, and as a result coherence ef...

Measurement of stereotactic beam data of 9 MV X-rays using diode detector

Background: Radiosurgery is a focal brain irradiation technique that delivers, usually in a single session, high dose of ionizing radiation. The presence of lateral electronic disequilibrium and steep dose gradients in small fields demands special attention to the selection of a suitable detector with respect to its size, composition and response. Materials and Methods : Small circular fields w...

A Novel Diagnostics of Ultrashort Electron Bunches Based on Detection of Coherent Radiation from Bunched Electron Beam in an Undulator

We propose a new method for measurements of the longitudinal profile of 100 femtosecond electron bunches for X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs). The method is based on detection of coherent undulator radiation produced by modulated electron beam. Seed optical quantum laser is used to produce exact optical replica of ultrashort electron bunches. The replica is generated in apparatus which consis...

Efficient harmonic microbunching in a 7th-order inverse-free-electron laser interaction

We have shown that a seventh-order inverse-free-electron laser (IFEL) interaction, where the radiation frequency is the seventh harmonic of the fundamental resonant frequency, can microbunch a beam of relativistic electrons inside an undulator. Using coherent transition radiation (CTR) emitted by the bunched 12.3 MeV beam as a diagnostic, strong microbunching of the beam is inferred from the ob...

High Accuracy Momentum Compaction Measurement for the APS Storage Ring with Undulator Radiation

We developed a new technique to measure the electron beam energy centroid and spread. It takes advantage of a sharp feature in the Advanced Photon Source (APS) diagnostic: undulator spectrum, the drop-off in the angle-integrated flux near its fundamental photon energy. The measurement technique has a high resolution and is nearly independent of the storage ring lattice functions. In this work, ...
